Is this person REALLY a professional engineer?

Someone performing a medical procedure must be licensed to practice medicine.  Someone auditing a public company must be licensed to practice accounting.  Similarly, someone performing professional engineering work must be licensed to practice professional engineering.

These regulations exist for a reason.  A professional licence tells the public that the practitioner has the required education and knowledge, understands and accepts the profession's legal and ethical responsibilities, is competent to practice, and is regulated by a professional body that maintains the required standards.

In Prince Edward Island, professional engineering is governed under the Engineering Profession Act.  The process of becoming a professional engineer is rigorous because it involves the public's interest and safety.

Anyone wanting to practice professional engineering in PEI must be licensed by Engineers PEI.  If a company is providing professional engineering services to the public, they need to hold a Certificate of Authorization, issued by Engineers PEI.

How can someone find out if a person or company is licensed to practice engineering in PEI?

If you suspect that you have been dealing with someone who is NOT a professional engineer, you can confirm if they are registered with Engineers PEI by checking the Member and Company Directory.
